Something about the Kansai dialect
We should pay much more attention to the Kansai dialect.
It is the only dialect in Japan which has been openly used by Kansai people even in Tokyo where people try to refrain from using their own dialects. Some Tokyoites admit that the Kansai language is so powerful and influential that they are overpowered by the language when they speak with people from the Kansai area.
There seems to be three major reasons for its strength. Number one is its long history. It is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. So Japanese people have no doubts of its validity. Number two is its sophisticated quality. It has been through almost every major wave of Japanese culture including Shintoism, Buddhism and the introduction of Chinese characters and it has accordingly been refined. Number three is its verbal persuasive power. Kansai people could not have been survived in such a competitive and culturally complicated area as Kansai with Osaka and Kyoto as its economic and cultural centers if they had not had a persuasive language.
This powerful language is essential to a way of thinking which has set original ideas for venture business. A great deal more unique and prosperous firms are from the Kansai area than any other part of the country. Nintendo is only one example. The biggest number of talented professional story tellers also come from this area. Nobel Prize winners and famous baseball players as well.
An official language institute should be established to do systematic research on the language. We don't have one yet. People from overseas should also be encouraged to know something about the language at the institution and communicate with people in the streets using it. It may bring about a breakthrough in understanding Japan clearly.
The Kansai dialect is not merely a variety Japanese spoken in one part of the country. It is more than that. It is the key to the heart and soul of Japan. Being aware of it, we can take a more confident stance in the Kansai area when we suggest something to Tokyo, for example.
