fruit という語彙

学習英英辞典 たとえば 『Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner's English Dictionay』 の記述は次のようになっている。

Fruit or a fruit is something which grows on a tree or bush and which contains seeds or a stone covered by a substance that you can eat.

Fresh fruit and vegetables provide fibre and vitamins.
...bananas and other tropical fruits...
Try to eat at least one piece of fruit a day.

周知のように：

「Fruit or a fruit is something」　の a fruit は 「果物ひとつ」 という意味ではなく Fruit と同じく 「果物」 という意味である。　

fruits と複数になる場合は果物が種類が複数であることを示す。

そして one piece of fruit は 「果物ひとつ」 という意味になる。

『ニューアンカー英作文辞典』 の　くだもの　の項 には次のような例文が含まれている：

リンゴが３個、なしが２個あれば、果物が２種５個ある　If you have three apples and two pears, you have two fruits [ two kinds of fruit ] and five pieces of fruit.

また、『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』 の fruit の項を見ると、次のような例文や説明が含まれている。

The carrot is a vegetable, not a fruit. ニンジンは野菜であり、果物ではない

two pieces of fruit は 「（同種類または異種類の）２個の果物」
