話は変わるが、thereis only one of me という表現がある。また、there is plenty of wine というような表現がもある。 いずれの場合も of の用法は同じである。 「私はたったひとりしかいない」、「ワインはたっぷりある」。

そして、one of ＋複数 と思い込んでいると、混乱する。

コメントありがとうございます。

「塔」 を訪れてくださる方は多いのですが、「塔」 を参考にして語彙強化をされる方は多くありません。手軽な方法ではないからでしょう。

しかし、fk さんは試験的にせよ語彙強化に着手され、既に確かな手ごたえを実感しておられる。　これからまだまだいろいろな発見やら覚醒やらがあると思います。　先がたいへん楽しみです。　英語の風景が、読むときでも、聞くときでも、しゃべるときでも、書くときでも、確実に変わっていくのを体験されるはずです。

＞　最初から辞書を用いるのは不安だったのと、何よりカード方式の効果を確かめたかったので、市販の単語集を何冊か購入し、表に英単語、裏に和訳というやり方でカード化しました。全部で２０００枚ほどあり、ひと束１００枚です。自分で実際にやってみることは重要ですね。

そうです！　理屈は抜きにして、とにかく自分でやってみないことには分かりません。　市販の語彙集と学習辞書は質・量ともにかなり異なるものですが、カード化の効用は同じです。

＞　まず定着の度合いが素晴らしいです（１時間で１００個程度です）。また長期記憶に移行させるための復習も容易です。この復習が何よりも重要ですね。実際にやってみてよくわかりました。

そうですよ！　他のみなさんもぜひ試してください。　復習の容易さがカードの最大の利点です。

＞　・・・・取り敢えずは忘却曲線を参考にし、臨機応変に変えていきたいと思います。

一般に流布している忘却曲線は、参考にはなりますが、あまりにも大ざっぱで、普遍的な有効性を持つものではまったくないでしょう。 人間の脳は不思議に満ちています。

ある範囲（各人によって大きく異なる）を超えた語彙群は、復習しなければ必ず忘れてしまいます。　また、復習を繰り返せば、たとえ忘れていても再記憶が速くなり、定着の度合いも徐々に向上します。　各語彙を見るだけでは即座に意味が思いだせなくても、読書やリスニングの場合のように文脈があれば、かんたんに理解できたりもします。　

＞　もちろんカードを用いても忘れます。しかし望むところです。そう思わせてくれるカードたち、もはや戦友です。

戦友・・・　そうですね、頼りになる砦（とりで）でもあります。

＞　・・・恐らくOxford Advanced Learner's Dictionaryを使うことになると思います。

手ごわい相手になるかもしれませんが、あせらずに続けてください。

話は変わるが、『日経』新聞の20009年6月21日(日）に「現生人類が生き残った理由？」という記事があった。　その記事を読んでいて印象に残ったことを引用・列記しておく：

１　かつて地球上には20種類近い人類が住んでいた。　しかし、今いるのは私たちホモサピエンスだけ。

（　知らなかった！　ちょっとびっくりした　）

２　ネアンデルタール人はかつて人類の祖先と考えられていたが、骨の化石から取り出したミトコンドリアＤＮＡの解析結果から、60万年前に分岐したと判明。

（　これも知らなかった！）

３　約4万年前から1万年あまりは欧州で現生人類のクロマニヨン人と共存していた。

（　これは知っていたけれど、具体的にどう棲み分けていたのか、交流はあったのかなかったのか、興味津々である　）

４　ネアンデルタール人の石器は・・・新しい道具を開発した形跡はなく、20万年近く同じ形状だった。

５　クロマニヨン人はほぼ1万年おきに石器が進歩。

（　へー！　という感じである。　いずれにしても、今の変化に比べたら何とまあ気の長い・・・）

話は変わるが、中学や高校の英語の授業に関していつも強く感じていることがある。特に、中高一貫の有名私立校の英語の授業内容に関してである：

１　なぜ教材の解答・解説を生徒に配布しないことが多いのか？　すべて配布すれば授業など聞かなくても、時にはもっと効率よく、独習できる生徒がかなり存在する。授業は自主学習成果の確認だけでもよいぐらいだ。　

２　あまりに多くの課題を与えすぎる。　限られた冊数の教材で充分である。　たとえば、『総合英語 Forest 』 と 『英語の構文１５０』 と 『基礎英作文問題精講』 と 『即戦ゼミ 大学入試 英語頻出問題総演習』 。　長文演習は授業で行う価値がある。

３　先生の発音やリズムは、1部の先生を除いて、ひどいものだ。　すぐれた音読の指導がぜひ望まれる。

Some people view the sculpture as art while others see it as an abomination.

今回引用したこの例文はいくつかの意味でおもしろい。

まず、文脈からして、the sculpture は 「その彫像」 のことで、可算名詞である。それを art という不可算名詞で受けている（もちろん the sculpture is an art という表現も、ニュアンスはある程度異なるが、可能だろう）。

ところが、同じ the sculpture を、次に、an abomination と可算名詞で受けている。

そして art と an abomination の間に while というつなぎのことばが入っている。

けっこう考えさせられる例文である。

ちなみに、『COBUILD』 は art を次のように記述している：

話は変わるが、今、読売新聞に 『ＩＱ８４』 の出版を記念して 「村上春樹氏インタビュー」 が掲載されている。写真から見てもすっかり風格のついた村上春樹は、現代の文学界を代表するエスタブリッシュメントのひとつだと感じる。

インタビューでの村上氏の発言はそれぞれ印象深いものであったが、「書きたいのに技術的に書けない、というものはずいぶん少なくなってきたと思う」 という発言を読んで、これこそ真の意味での「高度な言語学習でありその成果である」 と私は理解した。言語学習の至高の到達点は文学の創造にあると思っているからだ。

「（～の）犯罪を幇助｛ほうじょ｝する，（～を）教唆｛きょうさ｝する，煽動して罪を犯させる，（人を）そそのかして（～）させる」。abetだけでもこの意味があるが，しばしばaid and abetの形で使われる。おもに法律用語として使う。¶Pug was arrested for aiding and abetting his supervisor in a crime.（パグは上司の犯罪を幇助したかどで逮捕された）

思えば、実に不思議なことで、また、外国語も学べば分かるようになるのも同様に不思議なことではないか。「ヒト」 は人種にかかわらず共通の言語本能を持っているからだろう。人間の発する音声（あるいは書き言葉）はことごとく何らかの情報を担っていてそれを互いに瞬時に理解できる！

話は変わるが、作家・佐藤優（起訴休職外務事務官）は、『週間 東洋経済 6/20 特大号 ｢本当に強い中高一貫校」』 に寄稿した記事の中で 「語学習得の要諦は、いかに集中力を持って文法事項と語彙を覚えるかに尽 きる」 と断定している。

至極当然のことであろうが、世の風潮は概ね逆で、文法を軽視し幼稚な語彙で事たるとする。そんなことでは、せいぜい 「ペラペラ族」 しか生まれない。

「だいたい分かる」とか「英語は英語の語順で理解していちいち訳さない」 などと言っている人はその気になっているに過ぎない。時にはしっかり和訳して理解を確認することが欠かせない。そうする過程で「英語は英語の語順で理解」 できるようになる。

語彙に関しては、できるなら、「Longman Dictionary of American English Intermediate」 をあるいはそのレヴェルの他の辞書を覚えることだ。そうすれば、語彙レヴェルは幼稚ではなく普通になる。
　

学習英英辞典を読む（１）

学習英英辞典を読んでいると、おもしろいことがいくつかある。

そのひとつは、学校の英語の教科書や学習英和辞典には記述されていない例文が多くあることだ。

ペーパーバックなどを読んでいても同じことが言えるが、学習英英辞典の場合は、例文中で使われている語彙に分かりやすい説明があったり、言い換え表現が挿入されていたりして興味深い。

また、たとえありきたりの例文であっても、そこで使用されている語彙の説明や言い換え表現を読むと、何となしにあるいは微妙に違うところに目を向けさせてくれるようで楽しくなる。　「なるほど、こんなふうに言いなおせるのか！」とか思ったりする。

説明の仕方もおもしろい。

話は変わるが、ダン・ブラウンの 『天使と悪魔』 が大人気になっているらしい。それで、数年前に読んだペーパーバックの 『Angels & Demons』 を取り出してページをめくっていると484ページに私がマーカーで印をつけた　―　"As you probably know, Vittoria, human beings normally use a very small percentage of their brain power. However, if you put them in emotionally charged situations - like physical trauma, extreme joy or fear, deep meditation - all of a sudden their neurons start firing like crazy, resulting in massively enhanced mental clarity." ― というセリフが見つかった。

脳が、たまにでもそんな励起状態に成りうる限り、「生きる喜び」 は消えないのだと思う。

その励起の原因は、人により場合により、神の声かもしれないし、知的ひらめきかもしれないし、燃えあがる恋愛かもしれない。
