今回引用したこの例文はいくつかの意味でおもしろい。
まず、文脈からして、the sculpture は 「その彫像」 のことで、可算名詞である。それを art という不可算名詞で受けている(もちろん the sculpture is an art という表現も、ニュアンスはある程度異なるが、可能だろう)。
ところが、同じ the sculpture を、次に、an abomination と可算名詞で受けている。
そして art と an abomination の間に while というつなぎのことばが入っている。
けっこう考えさせられる例文である。
