学習英英辞典を読む（６）

読んでいる学習英英辞典は、『Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary』である。

abridge

【1】〈文章･話などを〉要約する,短縮する SHORTEN 【類語】:
an abridged edition 縮約版.

【2】〈期間･範囲などを〉縮める;〈権利･権限などを〉縮小する,削減する:
abridge a lesson 授業を短縮する
abridge a visit 訪問を早めに切り上げる
abridge a person's freedom 人の自由を制限する.

【3】 古 〈人から〉(…を)奪う,取り去る ( of…):
abridge a person of his rights 人から諸権利を奪う.

absent の項目より

2 : not present at all : not existing

・ Vegetation is almost entirely absent from the landscape.

absolve の項目より

1 : to make (someone) free from guilt, responsibility, etc.

▪ He was absolved of the responsibility of repaying the loan. [=he was not required to repay the loan]

▪ His youth does not absolve him from being guilty for these crimes. = His youth does not absolve him of guilt for these crimes.

2 : to give forgiveness to (someone who has sinned) or for (a sin)

▪ He asked the priest to absolve him (of his sins). = He asked the priest to absolve his sins.

話は変わるが、中学や高校の英語の授業に関していつも強く感じていることがある。特に、中高一貫の有名私立校の英語の授業内容に関してである：

１　なぜ教材の解答・解説を生徒に配布しないことが多いのか？　すべて配布すれば授業など聞かなくても、時にはもっと効率よく、独習できる生徒がかなり存在する。授業は自主学習成果の確認だけでもよいぐらいだ。　

２　あまりに多くの課題を与えすぎる。　限られた冊数の教材で充分である。　たとえば、『総合英語 Forest 』 と 『英語の構文１５０』 と 『基礎英作文問題精講』 と 『即戦ゼミ 大学入試 英語頻出問題総演習』 。　長文演習は授業で行う価値がある。

３　先生の発音やリズムは、1部の先生を除いて、ひどいものだ。　すぐれた音読の指導がぜひ望まれる。
