学習英英辞典を読む（４）

読んでいる学習英英辞典は、『Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary』である。

ability の項目より

abode の項目より

「住所不定（の）」¶The police cannot find him. He appears to be a man of no fixed abode.（警察はそいつを捜し出すことができない。住所不定の男らしいんだ）

話は変わるが、今、読売新聞に 『ＩＱ８４』 の出版を記念して 「村上春樹氏インタビュー」 が掲載されている。写真から見てもすっかり風格のついた村上春樹は、現代の文学界を代表するエスタブリッシュメントのひとつだと感じる。

インタビューでの村上氏の発言はそれぞれ印象深いものであったが、「書きたいのに技術的に書けない、というものはずいぶん少なくなってきたと思う」 という発言を読んで、これこそ真の意味での「高度な言語学習でありその成果である」 と私は理解した。言語学習の至高の到達点は文学の創造にあると思っているからだ。
